At Sarg Hubbard Park around 8:40 a.m. I heard calls of waxwings despite the strong & gusting wind. I realized that I was hearing the calls of Bohemian Waxwings, along with the more familiar calls of Cedar Waxwings. I saw the flock in a budding tree and two cherry trees in front of the Yakima Greenway office. They were feeding on cherries in the trees and on the ground below. Looks though my binoculars & scope showed 6 Bohemian Waxwings and about 25 Cedar Waxwings. I snapped some photos, phoned some birder friends to let them know about the Bohemians, then took Nori for a walk. Richard Repp posted on BirdYak that he arrived at 10:10 to find them still around, seeing 3 Bohemians before they flushed. Later he found one back in one of the same trees. John Hebert phoned me just before noon, saying he was looking at a Bohemian, and he'd not noticed before how pretty their faces were, maybe due to the stormy light. I'd thought the same thing, but my photos sure don't reveal it.
Both Rich & John seemed really glad to see the birds, not just to get them on their eBird county year lists. I'm especially glad of that.
